An absolutely -exquisite- testament to Pizzari's mastery of chiaroscuro, reveling in the dark reflections between Hunter and Prime. It feels like there's no stab of black that isn't countered by slash of white (spikes and feathers, lighted windows and hanging bodies, even the bloody sky itself) - perfectly balanced.
Incredible vertical lines here, too, with Hunter's empire and cityscape reaching to the sky while Prime's hanging bodies fall like rain and drag things to the dirt. Using Grendel's fork as the "sliding doors" divider between devils is perfect, and the brilliant use of the chillingly cold old-school tape lettering feels like a techno-industrial hijacking of David Mack's organic, hand-drawn, collage-style technique. And all the while, petals and feathers wind through the composition, giving the viewer some respite - a "safe space" for the eye to rest, even as it continues its inevitable descent through the piece. SUPER cool.
It feels like Luca took the (completely thematic and appropriate) "death by a thousand cuts" approach here, adding so many fine and clever details and touches that the viewer can't help but be overwhelmed regardless of where they look... and the more they look, the more it engulfs them; no mercy, no escape. A monstrously diabolical piece with a savage playing card symmetry to it. Another EPIC pick up and addition to your gallery, Fred! WOW!!
Thanks! I've gotten to know Luca over several years at NYCC. I think he does such great commissions & work. I did an artist's choice on this one and he started planning as we were speaking.
