Description

The last piece I shared from Bob McLeod three years ago was a sumptuous convention sketch of Wolverine f rom 1984 and here is one from 2001, a recent squirrel I chased at auction.

As always with Bob, the figure work is impeccable. His pose is great and Bob managed to make him look dynamic (the extended claws and leg) despite the fact he is having a relaxed moment which is not an easy task.

My favourite bit is probably his mouth as I find it pitch perfectly represented for someone holding a cigar with his lips while lighting it. Just amazing yet subtle facial expression.

While this one is not as elaborated a scene as the earlier one, the fun bit is of course comparing the two sketches and see the evolution of the artist, what might have changed. Both the pointy parts of his booths and mask have changed with a curvier look and the mask seems slightly bigger to me. Wolvie seems to have waxed some of those manly chest and upper arms body hair as well (probably due to Mariko or Storm asking, as he kept shedding those on her plants in her attic).

My appreciation for Bob’s Wolverine also comes from the fact that I find his version is very close to Byrne's but also that I place them in that group of very strong 80s artists I love who always produced strong (figure) work alongside Gammill, Perez Layton or Zeck.

That's a cigar!!?? I dunno bro, looks like that wacky tabaccy to me! Wolvie's gonna need to make a late night munchies run pretty soon. Nice McLeod!

Congratulations on catching the elusive squirrel!  I agree with Kavi, that sure does not look like a cigar that Wolverine is smoking!!

Bob is such a classic 80's stylist that were it not dates, I'd have assumed it might have been done then. Well, except for the fact that the drawing is stronger than his 80's work, which then makes me think it would likely have been done later than that. Great piece for sure!

McLeod's inks are the finishing touchj to many of the greats that emerged in the 80's and this '01 piece shows he can still hit that gear.

Impeccable, the pose and expression are a perfect take on the character, in a non-obvious way

An all-business Wolverine!  You'd think taking a break between hacking up Sentinels might warrant some resting, but not this guy...  Still alert and flexed, with popped claws ready to go.  Yup - fun to compare with your other (beautiful) McLeod Wolvie;like that one, McLeod's strong inking gives Logan a weighty and substantive presence on the page.  Lovely work!  Congrats!  (Squirrel!! :) )

Well done by McLeod. His drawing and inking style would suit many artists.
