In 1929 Wolverton submitted a science fiction strip, Marco of Mars, to the Independent Syndicate. It was accepted, but Independent quickly changed their minds when Buck Rogers debuted before Marco began publication. Maybe they didn't think the market was big enough for two outer space strips?

A few years later Wolverton came up with Chuck Rawjors, a Buck Rogers parody that didn't sell. This is number 8 from that series.
