Description

I’m glad I was able to add another page from that issue and that run as I consider that Stuart’s art on CapA was some of his finest mainstream work, probably due to the fact that, by his own admission, he struggled with what Remender was expecting of him and gave it his all.

On the first panel, we have a great close-up on what seems like a Sal Buscema punch (though I doubt it was Stuart’s intent). The over-the-top aspect of it, with Zemo’s trail of blood from his mouth to Cap’s fist is good cartoony fun (without even questioning how that blood can filter through that old sock of mask Zemo has been wearing for decades).

The second splashier panel shows how great Stuart is at body languages. Sam seems deservedly) disgusted by his nazi foe who in turn looks like a true victim showing a panicked defence stance. To the point that Sam’s anger and Zemo’s positioning have the former look like a bully here.

Also of note, is Stuart positioning a Tchekov’s sword on the ground as it will play a later role.

He also chose to draw the actual light effects here, as opposed to all those horrible flaring special effects many current artists are over populating/copy pasting our comics with 😉.

Then another close shot of Zemo getting the upper hand again in that Sam’s announced victory may have been premature. The uh oh(w shit) realisation on Sam’s face is great.

Then the escaping minion inside the cockpit to prompt the reader to turn the page to the next one.

All very horizontally told and consequently cinematic, with a variation of shots and angles to enhance dynamism with the usual impeccably suited inks of Mr WVG.

I like his art for the old school feel of storytelling that wasn't trying to jam in splashes at every chance.  Panel pages should be respected more for providing action and thrills while getting story across at a time when writers are driving a lot of sales these days.

Sweet Immonen page! Packs a big punch! Literally! But did you pay more or less than the 600 pencilled in the top right corner!? I'm guessing less if it was CL! ;-p

Wham, Bam, Thank you, Sam!  (Boy, did Zemo have -that- one coming!).  With Zemo flying back from Sam's right cross and Sam's posture in that second panel, this page warms me in a deliciously Gil Kane-like way.  Such solid storytelling and downright -gorgeous- visuals.  Immonen's Zemo is my favorite (I just love the way he draws a ghostly visage through the hood), and Sam looks like a million bucks there in panel 3.  You know I share your affection for this artist and particular storyline!  Lovely page, FM - great score, pal!

Explosive action in that opening panel pefectly sets off the page.
