Paul Carmack was a staff cartoonist for the Christian Science Monitor.

At this time, the Casablanca Conference was underway (Jan 14–24, 1943). Roosevelt and Churchill were meeting, and the headlines emphasized unity, long-range strategy, and “unconditional surrender.” But the supply chain to Britain and North Africa was key to success.

Unfortunately, the Battle of the Atlantic was still active and underway. U-boat sinkings of Allied shipping remained severe. Convoy coverage was incomplete, and long-range air patrols were still expanding. US production was adequate, and the problem was no longer making the weapons.

But what good is strategy if the pipeline is throttled? We know our target.
