As a character, I think Sonja suffers from the same problem that seems to follow Wonder Woman around. Artists keep trying to draw these characters as super models instead of the warrior women they are. Now far be it for me to complain about drawings of a hot WW or Sonja. But it's certainly hard for any of those drawings to live up to their image as warrior women. This piece seems more in line with who and what they're supposed to be (and look like). I have zero problem seeing THIS version of Sonja kicking Conan's ass. Yes, she's nowhere near as attractive as an Adam Hughes version or Scott Campbell version. But this one certainly stands out in a sea of barbie doll versions.
Thank you! Now, I'll give them Wonder Woman, since she's often portrayed in the continuities as an implied demigod, an outright demigod, or a full goddess. But I completely agree as to Sonja, and I've thought the same thing. Red Sonja CANNOT look like that after a lifetime of getting punched, speared, slashed, shot with arrows, stoned, mauled, thrown off cliffs, and the like. I think at best she'd look kind of haggard, which is what we have here.
You can believe it with her bulk and powerfully stern look that she's a Queen that came to power through conflict and earned by combat! Not a coincidence that the throne is also heavy and stonelike in texture and presence.
Yes, a real warrior here! Although someone may have blow-dried her hair for the portrait. The fierce, defiant expression is so assured - Sonja dares the viewer to challenge her or back down. Her strength and physicality seem emphasised by the way she fully occupies the frame of the image. Great piece.
