Description

1943.10.27 “Battered Sun”
by Paul R Carmack (1895-1977)
11 x 15 in., crayon and ink on board
Coppola Collection

Paul Carmack was a staff cartoonist for the Christian Science Monitor.

The Battle of the Treasury Islands was a Second World War battle that took place between October 27 and November 12, 1943, on the Treasury Islands group, part of the Solomon Islands, a nation of hundreds of islands in the South Pacific. The majority of the ground forces were provided by New Zealand.

The Allied invasion of the Japanese-held island group was intended to secure Mono and Stirling Islands so that a radar station could be constructed on the former and the latter be used as a staging area for further assaults. At the time of the battle, the islands offered the Allies further opportunities to bypass large groups of Japanese forces as they advanced through the Solomons towards the main Japanese base around Rabaul.
