Rick Grime’s Famous Horseback Ride to Atlanta The Walking Dead Issue 2 page 7

Rick finds out that taking a police cruiser to Atlanta is completely impractical given the scarcity of gas at the pumps and the abandoned vehicles.  Instead, in a stroke of luck, he finds a horse that he is able to mount and ride very proficiently to find his family.  In this scene, Rick explains to the readers some of his back story as he heads to Atlanta from his home in Kentucky to find his family.  Little do the readers know that horsemanship will be very important later in the Apocalypse.  The bottom panel shows how isolated and alone Rick is as the panel swallows the horse and him up as they ride into the distance.  This panel will slowly transform itself into one of the most iconic images from the comic as well as the famously adapted TV show as a tiny rider entering a huge but destroyed and empty Atlanta!
