Clay Ferguson, Jr. was perhaps the leading amateur science fiction artist of the 1930's. He provided work for several of the leading fanzines, including Science Fiction Digest, Fantasy Magazine, The Phantagraph and Fanciful Tales of Time and Space. Although he tried to break into the pro ranks, he was unsuccessful in doing so. Here's a piece by him, likely from the mid-1930's, that I picked up some time ago which I've yet to identity.

Looks pretty advanced for the era. Mad science fascinated a segment of society taking familar tropes to create the look we've all been accustomed to ever since. Ferguson shows a more animated feel to his work than the master illustrators of the time so there may have been resistance to keep it simple.
