Description

Ripley. Newt. Hicks. Hudson. Vasquez. Drake. Bishop. Xenomorph. Queen.

James Cameron's 1986 sequel "Aliens" to Ridley Scott's 1979 film "Alien" was released in theaters 40 years ago today on July 18, 1986! Big fan of both and I rewatch them frequently.

For a long time, I preferred the original over the sequel, but over the years the sequel became the more enjoyable film after numerous rewatches because it leans more into Action versus the suspenseful horror of the original which is still an amazing film but I find it harder to just throw on and enjoy “casually” as a rewatch.

James Cameron's track record with sequels is pretty damn good with "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" (just had its 35th anniversary recently!) and "Aliens". I'm not much of an Avatar guy though and still haven't seen the latest in that franchise.

The Alien franchise released several stinkers after Aliens IMHO, but I was pleasantly surprised by Fede Alvarez's "Alien: Romulus" released in 2024 and the "Alien: Earth" tv/streaming show in 2025. A strong resurgence for a franchise that needed a jumpstart for a new generation of fans to see something new and hopefully go back and discover the originals if they haven’t already.

Roby Amor did a killer job on this Aliens movie poster style illustration, happy to share it to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film. It's missing Gorman, Apone, Burke, and some other characters, but it still has most of the key players from the movie, with amazing graphite skills on display as usual from Roby. He really excels at movie poster style compositions from any type of franchise!

I could hear the James Horner score as I scrolled down the page!

Where's Apone?

Amor really has a handle on doing these likenesses. Give him an Alien book to draw!

For sure. I noted that Gorman, Apone, and Burke were fairly major characters that are missing towards the bottom of my write up - but most of the main players are here - not sure where he'd even squeeze in 3 more people into this so I suppose some sacrifices were made.

WOW, big congratulations on acquiring this gem!  Roby did a fantastic job creating wonderful likenesses of each character and presenting them in very momorable scenes from the movie!

I can't believe it has been 40 years since I first saw Aliens; it still remains one of my all-time favorites and holds up very well today.  I think I will give it another viewing tonight in honor of its anniversary!

Roby does it again! The man was MADE for movie posters, and this is a killer example. The individual characteristics of each player comes through brilliantly. Happy 40th!

Don't wanna be a Cameron idiot
Just want a commission Amor in new media
And can you hear the sound that's "Game Over"?
The subliminal line Siguorney Weaver

Welcome to a pencil commission
All across the Aliens nation
Where Roby's things are now meant to be displayed
Sequels in the dreams of tomorrow
There's Cameron who're meant to follow
For that's our love to argue

Well movie I'm the target America
I'm not a part of a Weyland agenda
Now that Yutani do the propaganda
And sing along poster rage of paranoia

Roby did a fine job, as always. I've been wanting to rewatch this for years, but it NEVER streams for free!

I bit the bullet nearly a decade ago I believe and got the first two films on physical media. Pretty cheap still if you can find a used Blu Ray or DVD in decent shape disc wise. In the last year I think the whole Alien franchise was added. removed, and then added back again to Hulu/Disney Plus (not "free" free but if you have those worth checking) likely due to prior licensing agreements (even though 20th Century Studios under Disney now technically owns the IP). I don't know the current streaming status as of today and it may differ in Canada obviously.

Man oh man oh man!  Just looking at this and having all the great tag lines from the movie pop into my head.  Just a fantastic piece from a great, great, movie.  I could nitpick and whine about Burke not being included, but it's so hard to complain about anything with this drawing.  I love Ripley front and center, hovering over Newt in that protective way.  I love Hudson, Drake, and Vasquez being featured as they were the standouts among the Marines.  And I love Bishop being placed in such a strategic way so his "guts" could be properly displayed.  Haha!  Yeah, the Queen is a bit obscured in view, but again, minor nitpick.  I don't know where you got this, but you're lucky I didn't see it before you did.  Awesome, awesome, piece bro!

I'm not sure how this slipped by me over the weekend, but better late than never!  I was listening to James Horner's score for Aliens just the other day - it still holds up so well, even if it borrows a bit from Horner's score for Star Trek II (my all-time favorite movie score).

Roby did an amazing job with this - I wish movie studios would hire him to create movie posters for their films rather than rely on the cut-and-pasted together posters that are all too common these days.

Just watched a YouTube video with James Cameron talking about all his movies.  It was really enjoyable.  And this piece is terrific!  Such a gem ... major congrats!
