DescriptionThis preliminary drawing is for the first splash page in DC 100 Page Super-Spectacular #4 -- one of the rarest of DC's 100 Pagers -- and their first (!) published in the summer of 1971. It is, however, quite different from the publishedversion. The section title is Macabre Mystery. When I saw the scan of this splash page on Mitch Itkowitz's site, I was pretty confident in a recollection of where the finished version of this splash page first appeared. I sold or traded my own copy of this book long ago, I'm afraid, so I asked my friend Kim Takeuchi for reference on the piece. Kim was helpful, as ever, and confirmed my suspicions! One of the neat things about this splash, and the others that Berni did for the book is that instead of using Cain or Abel, or one of the other horror book hosts, Berni himself decided to be the horror host. This splash page depicts Berni going up into his attic to find the stories he chose to have reprinted in the Super-Spectacular! I don't know if this was Berni's idea, or editor Joe Orlando's, but I suspect the former. Social/Sharing |
