Description

This cartoon illustration, from the May 1, 1915 issue of Puck magazine, is titled All Around the Town. The feature allowed Ewer to act as a roving reporter of sorts, as he drew various scenes in New York City. It's a mixed media piece done in ink and graphite, and has a real Ashcan School feel to it. There's a bit of a sense of both John Sloan and Art Young in the drawing. The original is missing one small piece of art in the lower left. There should be a brief sketch of a woman in that area, titled "A note". Unfortunately, that small piece is probably gone forever. I do have a repro of the full page below, so at least you can see our missing woman. One of the coolest features about the artwork is that it features a self-portrait of the artist in the very first "panel", as he's being pelted by either a turnip or a beet!

My thanks to Scotty Moore for allowing me to add this piece to my collection. And thanks to Rick Marschall, who provided information for the above in the pages of the late, great NEMO magazine, numbers 10 and 11.

He did this the year he died. Such a loss. You have to wonder what might his impact have been on this still-fledgeling medium had he lived to a ripe old age.
