Now this is another fantastic find I feel JUST a little bit smug about!

Back in the mid 1980's, just before Batman became terminally grim, and Jason Todd became an angsty street punk, there was a 7 issue run of Detective Comics, written by Mike W Barr, pencilled by Alan Davis and inked by Paul Neary, which encompasses everything I love about Batman. It was up to date, and at the same time respectfully retro (retro in the good way). It had adventure, darkness, humour and detective work in all the right proportions.

This fantastic example is from #569, the first issue of that oh-so-short run, and has Batman, Robin, the Joker AND (in the cage that's wheeled past) Catwoman, as the Joker's henchman (Straight Line... see, even the gang-members had names in these stories) snares an impetuous Robin and then Batman in good old-fashioned "fiendish deathtraps" (tm) - giant, strangling Chinese finger puzzles!

Where is the best place to begin to gush over this? The slightly cartoony, Dick Sprang feel to it? Batman calm in the face of danger, and worried more for Robin and Catwoman than himself? The Joker looking uncannily like Jack Skellington (Except six years before NBC came out)? Let's settle for the Jokers face in that last panel, with a monolithic Batman in the background.

This one is, to say the least, a keeper!

I can't agree with you more. Davis' run was far too short and I think his sudden departure during the middle of the "Year Two" storyline really upset MW Barr (a vastly underrated writer). If Davis had stayed on longer, he, Barr & Neary could have been the equal of Steve Englehart, Marshall Rogers & Terry Austin. So, yes, I'd say this page is a keeper, too. (I never saw the Jack Skellington similarities before, but I certainly do now.)

I remember the few issues of Detective Comics that Alan and Paul did together. It was short, but man were those issues memorable!!!! Great page!!!!

I remember this short classic run very fondly myself. This page simply screams "perfection" in every sense of the word. Alan Davis leaves his own unique stamp upon the characters, yet paying a clear homage to the immortal artists of yesterday. Your love and appreciation of this magnificent piece of art shows it to be in the right hands. "A GRAIL OF GREATNESS"!!! P.S. That Joker in the last panel, a stand-out.

The Barr/Davis run may have been short, but it was incredibly memorable. Still among my favorite Batman stories decades later. Thanks for sharing this great page from it!
