Steve "The Dude" Rude was born 12/31/56 in Madison, Wisconsin. He is a lanky (6-foot-5) Wisconsinite who considers Jack Kirby and Andrew Loomis two of his biggest influences.
His career began in 1981 when he co-created the groundbreaking Nexus comic series with writer Mike Baron. This space saga catapulted him into the field of comics, where he became highly sought after by major publishers. Steve has added his own style and attention to detail to Kirby’s streamlined dynamism, which has made his work very popular with fans and professional s alike.
His talents have led to a variety of awards - the Russ Manning Newcomer Award in 1983, the Kirby Award for Best Artist in 1986, and numerous Will Eisner Awards for Artistic Excellence. Rude is one of the hardest working artists in the field, constantly striving to improve his work. Much of his practice, model sketches, exercises, and his experiments with new techniques can be found in his legendary sketchbooks. One such sketchbook was published by Kitchen Sink Press in 1989 in its original unexpurgated form.
To date, He has drawn hundreds of comics most iconic heroes. Chief amongst them Space Ghost, Superman, Batman, Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor, Captain America, and the X-Men. His most recent works include his new series Steve Rude's The Moth, as well as the ongoing adventures of his magnum opus, Nexus. Early 2008 also saw the publication of the monograph Steve Rude: Artist in Motion, which he also co-wrote with publisher John Fleskes. Within the last couple of years, he has added self-publishing (under his Rude Dude Productions) and Animation and Design to his ever expanding body of work.
He currently resides in Peoria, Arizona.
