Description
This and its companion, Meekness, are the earliest set of pendants with girl figures by Hunt. The only other set consists of "Saturday Night" and "Sunday Morning," both published in Hunt's Comic Sketches, but currently untraced. There are only a few other pendant pairs, all with boys: "Contented with Little" and "Happy with More," showing John Swain in 1830 or 1831; John Swain again in the two versions of "The Attack" and "The Defeat," -- the first set in Sheepshanks' collection dated 1833 and 1834, and the second set from the Nettlefold Collection both dated 1834; and "Up in the Clouds" and "Down in the Dumps," from 1844, also with John Swain and probably at the very end of his tenure as a model for Hunt.

Meekness is in much better condition and was often exhibited without Sauciness. There is also another version of Sauciness, at least as faded, if not more so.
