Not sure where or when Todd made this statement (probably on more than one occasion, as it's been quoted several times), but I think he was trying to make an argument for quality versus speed. Apparently he lacked the understanding that anyone who really wants to make a living as a comic book artist should be able to do both! And that, as a professional comic book artist, he is walking in the footsteps of legendary illustrators who not only "grew roses", but produced entire gardens and STILL met their deadlines!

As far as his SHIT vs. ROSES argument, well, I think I'll take Kirby's shit (and Buscema's shit, and Kane's shit, and Romita's shit) over Image "roses" any day of the week and twice on Sunday!
