DescriptionMy father was born in Oakland, California and served in the Navy at NAS Alameda during World War II. I was born in the city, too. So I'd been thinking of getting a drawing of this CL-95 light cruiser which earned 9 Battle Stars. She was an escort for aircraft carriers and battleships with three twin 5-inch gun mounts fore and aft, as well as numberous 20- and 40mm anti-aircraft guns. Further strengthening its bay area connection, it was built by Bethleham Steel in San Francisco.I'd read Marvel's A Sailor's Story and its sequel A Sailor's Story Book Two: Wind, Dreams, and Dragons by Sam Glanzman. He was a comic book artist and a destroyer sailor on the USS Stevens during the war. An ideal choice for this subject. I contacted Sam's agent Larry Shell in mid-January and arranged this commission which arrived on February 4. I'm thrilled with Sam's work.

I enjoy reading about and looking at commissions which are a little more personal in nature. And yes, Mr. Glanzman was indeed an inspired choice for this subject matter.
