Description

This illustration, most likely from the mid-1990s, appeared in Gourmet magazine. Marvin drew three illustrations a month for the magazine over a three year period. This illustration features Chef Martin Markovitz, from the Caliban restaurant.

There are a number of elements that I love in this piece, from the wonderful composition, to the expressive line work. There is a slight tippiness in the composition, ala Pierre Bonnard's work (of which Marvin is a big fan). I love that sort of pictorial tension in an image.

It's amazing how some of the simplest looking images are the most difficult to produce. The internal editing required to produce a piece of this quality in this manner showcases a monumental understanding of the expressive line.
