Alex Ross - DC Retail Poster Prelim

A prelim I picked up from the fine folks at Graphic Collectibles.

This a super finished "prelim" to Ross's first commission for DC, a retail poster. Ross would go on to create countless masterpieces for DC, including his masterwork, Kingdom Come, but this is the first.

The final painting varies from the prelim in several ways. First, there are extra characters. In addition to Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Hawkmman, Captain Marvel and Flash, the finished painting has Steel (yawn!), Catwoman (why?!) and Aquaman. For Captain Marvel, he was reoriented in the finshed painting, so the viewer could see the lightning bolt on his chest. As for Green Lantern, the prelim obscured the face of GL (but if you look closely at his left arm, you know who it is), in the painting it is obvious GL is Kyle and not Hal.

The prelim measures 10" x 15".
