It is difficult to fathom that an artist as legendary as Frank Frazetta ever had to produce samples of his work to shop around to publishers. But, the stories of even the greatest creators have to start at the beginning and in the late 1940s. Frazetta produced the offered page as a "try-out" for work in Romance comics. It is unknown if it was produced for a specific publisher, but Frazetta certainly did go on to work within the genre, most notably for Famous Funnies' Personal Romance. The career that followed in comics, illustration, and fine art needs little exposition. It should suffice to say that Frazetta's influence on other comic book artists borders on immeasurable, and Frazetta originals are among the most sought after pieces in the field of comic art and fantasy illustration.

This is beautiful example of his early work and it contains many of the elements for which the master would come to best be known -- a macho hero with a knotted physique, an alluring female with supple curves, and a moody atmosphere rendered with simple mastery. This piece first came to market in 1985 when Frank Frazetta placed it to auction. Since then, it has been owned by a single individual who is the consignor of this piece. To our knowledge, this is the first time it has been offered for sale since 1985 and we are quite excited to be re-auctioning it with absolutely no reserve some 20 years after the original hammer. Like the consignor, we are confident that buyers will appreciate the beauty and significance of this work. This large twice up art has an image area of approximately 12" x 18". There are minor stains in the 1st, 2nd, and 5th, and final panels, but the image is otherwise very clean with only a small bit of corrective white in the lower left panel.
