Blackhawk

As I’ve gotten older, my taste in comic art has broadened. The work of fine artists I overlooked decades ago is now incredibly appealing to me, and the foremost example of these fine artists I didn’t appreciate in my youth is Dan Spiegle. Through the magic of ebay, I’ve bought and read many of the comics he’s drawn over the years, beginning with his 1960’s long runs on “Space Family Robinson” and “Korak,” then his brilliant stint on the 1980’s “Blackhawk” revival, then the indie comic “Crossfire,” and several others. Dan’s craftsmanship, attention to detail, and storytelling ability got better and better with the years. The few pieces of his published art that I have in my portfolios were not well-served when they were printed in comics with cheap paper and muddy colors – the original pages show the artist’s true intentions and great talent. In addition to the published pages, I’m fortunate to have four watercolor illustrations by Dan, the latest of which is this 11x17 Blackhawk illustration. I’m so excited about this art, I haven’t even received the original yet, but I wanted to post a scan here for others to view. Someday, this beauty, along with my three other watercolors by Dan, will be framed and hung above my desk at home.
