Soldado by Steve Erwin

I met Steve Erwin at a small show in Tulsa in March of 2008. We talked about his upcoming project, an account of the first battle at the Alamo. He ran out of time before he could get around to my sketch request because we chatted so long. . . anyway, he told me to email him and he'd send me a sketch. Here's what I wrote, back in March '08: "Steve, It was really excellent to meet you at the Tulsa Comic Con today. Thank you very much for your time and your generosity. Since you offered to do a sketch for me, I would love a Mexican soldier (one of Santa Anna's real deal soldiers-- not the conscripted rabble that tried to take the Alamo the 1st time) in his full regalia. A Captain or a General would be ideal. I can send you a money order or Paypal you whenever you have a chance to get to it . . ." Here's his response:

"Actually, thank you. I appreciate your letting me bend your ear about all that Texian stuff -- I've been reading and researching for three years now (holy crow! three years?!) just getting the story into a scriptable fashion. It's been a solo effort all this time and it was really nice to be able to talk to someone about it. That was actually the first time I had the opportunity to chat in any detail about it. Thanks a bunch.


Just for asking for a Mexican soldado (I'll consider you the first to ask -- because you are...) just send me a mailing address and it's yours. No charge. It'll be fun."

It arrived today! I love the white pencil highlights on his hat, and the distinctive Erwin negative contour shading. Thank you, Steve!
