DescriptionAl Capp, flush with success with Li’l Abner approached Raeburn van Buren about drawing a new strip he wanted to write. Van Buren initially turned him down but relented and Abbie an’ Slats was born. It ran from July 12, 1937 to 1971 when van Buren retired. Never a great success, it did persist until its principals decided to quit. It was initially penned by Capp and then by his brother, Elliot Caplin. This is a huge 24” by 17”. The man is Bathless Groggins, the real star of the strip.Social/Sharing |
