When I bought my first piece from Jonathan, I noticed this piece in his portfolio and asked him what it was for. He told me it was a sample page he did for his Wildstorm editors, but he just never got around to finishing it. I asked if he might be interested in selling it and was surprised to hear him say yes. Since he was on his way out, I told him to just hang on to it for me until we could work out the specifics. As the days passed, I kept thinking about the piece and finally got the idea to ask Jon if he might be willing to actually finish the drawing for me. The bad news is that he said no. But the good news was even better. I don’t know if Jon sensed my disappointment, but he told me that although he had no interest in finishing the drawing, he would just give it to me! Wow! How cool is THAT?
Anyway, a quick word about the piece. It’s done on standard 11x17 art board, but only the top portion was finished. The lower half consisted of some very light pencils for her legs and some blue line background elements that I can’t even make out. When I photocopied it for scanning, the bottom half didn’t really show up very well, if hardly at all, so I decided to just show the finished half. It really IS a terrific little drawing, and my heartfelt thanks to Jonathan Wayshak for such a wonderful gift. Look for big things to come from this very talented young artist.
