I met up with a couple of folks at the Smithsonian National Gallery of Art for
Darwyn Cooke's presentation on Parker: The Hunter, one of which is my old confederate in the DC comics scene, Mike Rhode, who runs both the
ComicsDC blog (that I occasionally assist with) and now a comics blog/column for the
Washington City Paper. The other person we met up with was Mr.
Shannon Gallant (a.k.a SL Gallant). Shannon is a DC resident currently working on IDW's GI Joe title, and while I knew he resided in the area, I'd never met him. Mike recently profiled him for the Washington City Paper, so we all met up and sat together during the presentation (which was great, by the way!). Afterwards, Darwyn did a signing and because of how late it ran, how long the line was, and the relative tone of the event, I decided not to bother asking him for a sketch. However, after the event, Mike, Shannon, and I went across the street and grabbed some Thai food, and while we were digesting, I asked if Shannon wanted to do a sketch for me. He reluctantly agreed after Mike and I were able to scrounge up a pencil and Sharpie for him to use (he had his own fine-tipped pen with him). He went on to do this great Thor sketch while we discussed the merits of a more true-to-form Norse outfit of leather, misadventures in inking, and varoius and sundry other tangential topics. Fun evening with the guys and an unexpected and cool sketch from Shannon! Apologies for the scan quality -- had to do a picture off the phone as my new scanner isn't connected to the computer at the moment.
