DescriptionA grail for me. Will Eisner's The Spirit goes out in a blaze of glory with this extended story line. Vintage Woody brilliance. I threw this on the lightbox the minute I got it to decipher the edited paste ups. The story originally featured a Hitler archetype who escaped retribution by fleeing to the Moon, but TPTB were queasy about that, so Eisner & Woody had to alter the story, making the dictator a South American despot. To that end his mustache was extended, his limp bangs whited out, and his swastika replaced by an anchor, or pick and shovel type insignia. The pasted over words are as follows: PAN 3- Enemies of the Reich... ghetto rabble. PAN 5- My Fuhrer. PAN 6- The crew Haupt picked are all Jews. Magnificent and oversized. Many thanks to Lee De Broff for facilitating this acquisition. Social/Sharing |

Congrats! The piece was in my collection for more than a decade. It was the first Wood Spirit page I saw and I grabbed it! 'Always enjoyed holding it up to the light and seeing the Hitler hair under the whiteout. And yes, thanks to Lee for helping find the page a good new home. All the best, Norm

At the risk of hyperbole, this whole story is peak comics art, and this page is an amazing example. As our malevolent protagonist might have said, "Wally Wood über alles!"
Art like this begs the question of how one mere mortal could have created it (albeit with Feiffer's layouts and Eisner's white-out), and how another mortal gets to enjoy it in person every day!
