DescriptionI began hooking up with Chris Ware at Chicago Comicons when he would come thru my booth there hunting down cool obscure comic books. One comicon there in 2003 I loaned him my fabled silver briefcase with its plethora of my favorite rare comics lore & artifacts. When I went to pick it up at his house Monday morning, his wife thanked me profusely for allowing him to hang with it for a couple days. Seems he had been going thru a creator's block of some sort then, and is not a happy camper to be around when those rare moments occur. Here Chris has drawn me as Obadiah Oldbuck as one of the artifacts in that silver briefcase was my first edition the Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck, Wilson & Co, New York City, Sept 14, 1842. Twas my pleasure, anytime. Social/Sharing |

I treasure this drawing of me Chris unexpectedly drew of me whilst I was immersed in deep research along with a few dozen other dedicated friends more than a decade ago now ferreting out forgotten proper origins of the American comic book. Most of the history books before 1999 remain simply wrong. It's been both a blessing and a curse as forces of pure research collided with certain "marketing" forces seeking to maintain a time line easier to huckster aspects of this wonderful art form.

Wow, You have a first edition as Obadiah Oldbuck?! Impressive! And it is very, very cool how Mr. Ware has aped the drawing style so well....it's almost indistinguishable! He can draw in so many different styles (as evidenced by his published sketchbooks), it's truly breathtaking. "The Last Great Cartoonist", indeed! Thanks so much for sharing this!
