Description
Jeffrey Jones passed away today in the presence of his family... It was his grandson Nikolai's birthday. His contribution to our hobby was tremendous; his lively and unique vision helped demolish the gap between comic and fine art. The enormity of his legacy has yet to be understood. His body of work was consistently brilliant; yet he regularly reinvented his style. He was truly a genius, in a world where the word is so overused...and at the same time he was a humble, gentle, troubled soul who struggled with self doubt and often self loathing and depression. His art often spoke to loneliness, melancholia, isolation, innocence, solitude, stillness...and often humor. Ironically he thought little of his art, yet his idol, Frank Frazetta told me he thought Jones was his only real competition... Jeffrey couldn't quite believe that when I told him, but he was grateful for the sentiment. He lived as a transgendered person for the last 10 years or so, but he told me several years ago "it was a mistake", that 'of course I still love woman as a man would', that he still loved his wife Mary Ellen very much. He said that he hoped that being transgendered might have helped him be 'less depressed'. It didn't. He struggled with severe health issues and lived in an assisted living facility for the last years of his life, his artistic muse buried too deep for him to find it again. Finally, on May 19, 2011 at 4:00am, emancipated and tires of fighting, he gave up the spirit in the still of the morning. I'm reminded of the song Starry Starry Night by Don Mclean, who lyrics about troubled Vincent Van Gough say: "...Vincent, This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you..." So, farewell, my friend Jeffrey, you left the world a much better place, though you never believed that-- may God grant you the peace that eluded you in this life.

What a sad day today is. I remember my 2nd or 3rd year in Art School during a course of American Illustration. We were asked to paint a piece in the style of one of the great American illustrators. I chose Jeffery Jones... to say we lost a great artist is truly an understatement.

To this should be added that he was a sweet and kind human being. I am just in tears today.

I never met Jeffrey in person, but I had the pleasure to correspond with him through the years and to be his Facebook friend. I have Jeffrey’s paintings hanging on my walls to remind me every day of how great an artist he was. Just like many of the world’s greatest artists he was a sensitive person, and I am sure he fought hard to cope with the challenges of life. Just look at his paintings, and you see a person who was clearly familiar with death as well as life. I am sure he has moved to a better place, and I am sure Heaven just got itself a new member, who will be sitting there for eternity, discussing art with Picasso, Renoir, Monet and the rest of the gang.

I will miss her art and her gracious spirit. She was a wonderful member of Comicart-L for quite a while several years back. Her work was inspired and inspiring! Farewell Jeffrey Catherine!

Most sad to see Jeff has gone, but hopefully to a cosmically peaceful place. A visionary artist.

First Frank Frazetta and now Jeffrey Catherine Jones. It's just as bad as when we lost Jack Kirby and Frank Zappa in just a few months. And the world gets poorer and poorer...
I remember meeting her at NYC National Con, the period was the one portraied in the top right photo. It was great to finally shake hands after reading her passionate and humourous posts on Comicart-L.

Farewell, my sister, fare thee well.
The elements be kind to thee, and make
Thy spirits all of comfort: fare thee well.

If I could express my feelings adequately I'd be almost as good a writer as Jeffrey was an artist

Thank you Rob for your posting of Jeffrey's passing. Jeffrey brought great joy and love into this world, and inspired me greatly. God let us experience Jeffrey for a short time: though I am deeply at a loss now; I know his soul is finally at peace. Bless you Jeffrey.
