Description
This was my first time working with artist Karl Waller. I loved this Kubert cover but I was not sure if we could translate it from a war setting to the Legion and still keep the feeling of overwhelming and unseen menance and imminent danger.Kubert style had a rough raw edge about it depicting the messiness of conflict whereas the 31st century Legion has a clean, crisp feel about it. I didnt know if these two worlds and styles could mesh well.

Boy... Was I ever wrong !!!

From the first moment I saw the prelims that Karl sent me of Krypto going mental, trying to get off his leash and attack the villians , I knew that Karl was going to do it in style. The whole thing has a crazy frenetic energy about it...

The amount of fine detailed work that Karl poured into this is insane. Validius is scary, but even distant background minor figures like Mano and The Persuader got the royal treatment from him ,and Karl came back again and again, with prelims, questions about costumes, poses, logo etc. It took a while as Karl had other projects but he kept me in the loop and assured me that it would be worth the wait. He was right...

I have a fondness for the Krypto as Super-guide dog image . It was a popular Silver age theme. Here is a link to one by John Watsons. It is great

but it shows how two talentened artists can put their own stamp and spin on something, as the images are as different as night and day. I highly recommend Karl to others. He is working on a Legion Suicide Squad piece for me at present. He can be contacted at

I would buy a comic called Legion War Tales without giving it a second thought. Really like how this one adapted the challenging source material to fit your theme. Keep 'em coming.

I was holding of putting this up as I wanted to show it to a buddy at the Baltimore Con this weekend, but since he cant make it, I posted it. I know its a cliche around here but the scans do not do it justice. It has such a great creepy and dangerous vibe to it. Karl Waller is very talented indeed.

Not every artist is comfortable sharing the artistic process but I love watching it all pull together and posting it on CAf. It just adds to the overall CAF viewing experience.

You've found another great one in Waller---and what an inspired choice of cover to reimagine for the Legion!

Yeah, he nailed it.

I do think that a blind Superboy, healthy Supergirl, and an angry Krypto could handle them though!
