David Finch - Aphrodite IX #1 Cover (frame)

This is one of the original covers used on Aphrodite IX #1. What's cool about this one is that after Dave pencilled and shaded it, he colored this one himself in the computer. You can see where the original art actually has a moon drawn in as well, but Dave removed it for the coloring design he did. To compliment his design, I searched for months gathering just the right materials for the frame I wanted to make. First I found this map store in AZ and bought a huge world map for the first layer. It actually took a while to find the right map because most maps have light colored water for the worlds oceans, and I wanted a darker blue to match Dave's colors better. Then, I found this parchment looking map paper for the second layer. The top paper was then cut and torn just right to show portions of the map underneath, but also making sure not to reveal too many sections of land mass. The edges of the torn paper were all hand colored to resemble a burning effect, and small gold stars were added at the end to accent and cap off the few that are present in Dave's design. Finally, all of this was glued to the top matte, and then cut for the art and comic areas. This is one of my more ambitious frame designs, but I get a lot of comments from people on this one, so it was all worth it. Enjoy!
