DescriptionScrooge stands guard over an enormous sack of cash as various friends (Gladstone Gander, Gyro Gearloose, the Junior Woodchucks scoutmaster, Bombie the Zombie) and enemies (Flintheart Glomgold, three Beagle Boys, Magica De Spell, Argus McSwine, Glittering Goldie) in a neat pen and ink illustration on bristol. This piece has been used several times, but was most likely created for Barks' 1976 appearance at Boston's Newcon, his first major comics convention.Bombie the Zombie, Gongoro for italian publications, is a zombie created by Carl Barks in 1949. He is under the influence of the African sorcerer Matumbo who summons him from the world of the dead to punish Uncle Scrooge for the evil he has done to his tribe. Since its creation, the character of Bombie, a stereotypical black character typical of the 1940s ( nose ring) will be subject to strict censorship: Barks had planned to draw the zombie with totally white eyes and no pupils, but had to give it up due to pressure from Western Publishing . It would then be Don Rosa, some fifty years later, who would be able to draw in "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" a gongoro without pupils as "The Duck Man" had intended. In 2023 Disney prohibits the reprinting of two stories by Don Rosa of the "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck": "The Empire Builder from Calisota" (1994) and "The Dream of a Lifetime" (2002) because of the presence of Bombie and his excessive stereotyping, but also because of Uncle Scrooge unscrupulous colonialist behaviour. The art has an image area of approximately 14.25" x 4.75". Signed and noted "Drawn by Carl Barks 1976." Auctioned by Heritage in 2011. Published in " La grande dinastia dei paperi (Corriere della Sera) no. 44 - Paperino agente per un giorno (2008) Social/Sharing |
