George Clark - The Neighbors - 1944 - WWII & Groceries

I love the drawing in this episode of The Neighbors, dated October 24, 1944. Clark sometimes did his very best work with fewer means. In this case, the lovely brushwork that adorns this panel is just enough to layout a wonderful space. He then put the central character in black, with just a little bit of litho crayon to give her greater substance. Just beautiful.

The caption reads: "Just to be patriotic I'm carrying these groceries home unwrapped. I thought if I'd cut through the back alley I wouldn't meet everybody I know!" There were all sorts of paper and scrap metal drives during WWII, so this was one small way of helping the war effort.
