Description
Which comes first..the cover or the commission ? In Re-Legion World, its the cover usually but this one dared to be different..

I have great respect for Colleen Doran's work both in and outside of the Legion. I had hoped for the longest time to have her do a Re-Legion commission. Element Lad has been her favorite Legionnaire and I wanted a chance for her to make him shine.

Her schedule is crazy so when I saw a page of Element Lad doodles & prelim headshots going up for auction on Ebay, I pounced.

With her blessing I told her I wanted to rework the sketch. Even Chris Ivy thought I was crazy . But I remembered the Romance & Love stylistic renderings that graced the cover of Action Comics Issue 568 and I thought we could make it work.

Chris did a great job as usual. He transformed it while remaining true to Colleen's stylings.

But here is the odd part. I found a copy of the comic in the back issue bin after everything was completed and read it. The back up story which was the inspiration for the cover features a 30th century device that goes astray and who was send back from the Legion Era to work alongside Jimmy Olson to retrieve it...none other than Office Shauvaghan Erin of the Science Police and beloved of Element Lad..

So this was truly meant to be and Cosmic Kismet /Cosmic Irony is on display with this Valentine Re-Legion Cover.

Enjoy

Well that's an interesting way to make a Re-Legion cover! I knew it was Doran the moment I saw the thumbnail as her style is so distinctive. And Chris did a great job making it into a cover.

Great story! I'm impressed that you got a coherent cover homage out of a page of sketches and made everything work! That's vision - and obsession! Likewise, love Colleen's work.

This is what's so great about CAF - where else would I get to see this wonderful piece and read your great description of how it came to be?
