DescriptionFreedom Brigade #12 (Sep, 1980)US-Canada Relations When three members of the Freedom Brigade decide to come to Canada to make demands of the War Department, some fighting Canucks remind them who won the War of 1812 (hint: it wasn't the Yankees). Since Canadians had been fighting against the Nazis since 1939, the Americans' "late" entry into the war did not put them in much of a position to make demands. So three of Canada's finest arrive at the Windsor-Detroit crossing, the Ambassador Bridge, to intercept the Yankees before they enter Canada. The writer Thomas Royale brings another issue of the retroactive series set in WWII, with perhaps a bit of pointed social commentary on how long it took to get the USA into a war the Canucks had been fighting for two years. Arvell Jones provides the dynamic cover, the first of many. Roll Call: The Canadians Commander Steel - Commander Jack Steel was a member of the International Police Service based in Ottawa, Canada and acted as a sort of government liaison to the Canadian mystery-men involved in the war effort. Nelvana of the Northern Lights - Nelvana expanded her protection from the Inuit population to the entirety of Canada during the War. Penguin - The Penguin was a detective and master spy who protected Canada against Axis spies, saboteurs and infiltrators. vs (the order pairs up with the Canadians above) The Americans The Flag - Functioned as a leader of the Freedom Brigade. Black Terror - occasional second in command. The Face - another tuxedo wearing masked mystery-man, the Face could be a bit of a hot head, but dependable in a crunch. Setting: The Ambassador Bridge which connects Detroit, USA and Windsor, Canada. ~~~~~~~ After seeing some sweet Arvell Jones drawings on CAF, I decided to commission him for some Bronze Age goodness. Arvell had worked on DC's group of WWII mystery-men, the All-Star Squadron, so this seemed a natural subject for him. He gave me three thumbnail sketches to choose from (see additional images below) and voila! Perennial commission-ee (?) Chris Ivy provides the inks, masthead, text, etc. You just can't beat the verisimilitude. This marks the first time I've commissioned one artist to pencil and another to ink. Fascinating, I know.
