DescriptionH. L. (Herman Lui) Drucklieb remains one of the great mysteries to me. Such a talented artist, with so little known about him. This very sweet little pen & ink drawing is from 1915, and is typical of the pieces that he drew for John Martin's Book, the magazine aimed towards children. The image measures only 11" long, but the detail is quite wonderful. I've posted a larger-than-life image of the piece, as well as a couple of detail shots. The illustration is inscribed to "H.K." I have no idea who this is. Harold Knerr? Heinrich Kley? I'll never discover the answer to this mystery, but at least my little Drucklieb collection has a new addition. Social/Sharing |

Here's my thought process: "H.L. Druckleib? Ho Hum, another one of these numberless turn-of the-century illustrators no doubt, and... hey, that's really good!" Love the shields.
