Description

I've always wanted a Watchmen page. I'm very glad to have scored this - the title splash from the final issue. It's one of six splash pages showing the death and destruction in New York.

In addition to the amazing writing, this book really struck me because this is the first time I can remember a comic villain's plan actually succeeding. As the previous issue wrapped up, you fully expect the heroes to put up a great fight and save the world. And then suddenly it's just the great unexpected "I did it thirty-five minutes ago". And instead of the climactic battle in the final issue, there's just devastation.

This page ties together a lot of the different plot threads in subtle ways - the newspaper vendor shielding the kid, the sort of hidden smiley face with the blood, the lightning bolt, all the references to War?, the "Veidt Method" paper that becomes a double meaning now, and so many other well-thought through references.

I thought the creature (Cthulhu) seemed like such a wild and unique touch at the time. Later, a friend pointed out to me how, in many ways, Moore & Gibbons borrowed Lovecraftian themes, plots and imagery and sprinkled them throughout the book which gave me yet another avenue of exploration when I pull it off the shelf for one my frequent rereadings.

Dave Gibbons mentioned in a recent shoot interview on the youtube channel 'Cartoonist Kayfabe', that the words "...or al die..." are highlighted on the wall. This becomes more obvious on the final printed page with John Higgins coloring.

Never noticed that to be honest :-)

I haven't listened to that episode yet, but it's in my queue. You just moved it up to the top!  Those guys have done a great job on that podcast.

That's what I love about this page, there are little allusions like that to all sorts of things.  It's like every square inch has its own planned significance.
