Description
Mescal Ike was a little known daily strip which ran for 14 years, from 1926 to 1940. Art Huhta, a cartoonist with some terrific skills, handled the drawing chores, while S.L. Huntley wrote the dialogue. When Mescal Ike was at its end, Huhta began drawing the strip that he's most well known, Dinky Dinkerton, a Sherlock Holmes spoof strip.

This example of Mescal Ike, dated May 3, 1937, is the only original I've ever run across from the strip. It features some wonderfully rich and animated drawing, especially in the panels where the horse is in and out of the picture plane.

I'm surprised this strip didn't suffer the same censorship as the short-lived "Peyote Pete."

Mescal Ike increasing becomes a favorite character of mine. Peyote Pete, Coke Bloke, Weed Sneed, Beth Meth... what a fine group!
