Description
Here we have a tour de force original illustration, which is a wicked satire on behalf of Dana “Ma” Crumb (Robert Crumb’s first wife, and source of many of his female caricatures), who was being ripped off for publishing rights and royalties by Snow Lion Press in 1998, so Wilson created a masterpiece of protest humour with an impoverished “Ma” Crumb barely hobbling along in her threadbare rags in the snow being whacked over the head defenselessly by the giant slathering money bag wielding ‘Snow Lion Beast’ as the irreverent Checkered Demon chortes at the spectacle decrying “Up The Lion’s Ass!”
The piece has a life even greater than the composition in that Dana Crumb actually walked around with the sign at the 1998 Wonder Con (S.F., CA) protesting the company’s business practices, and posters were printed from the artwork and sold to help raise money for her cause.
This in not an ordinary static run of the mill example of original comic art, as it has dazzling over-sized dimensions, a true life force, and first hand provenance. The illustration measures no less than 28” by 44” (71 x 112 cm)! Even with my large 21” x 11” scanner, I had to scan it in eight pieces.
Dana “Ma” Crumb has been a close friend of Wilson’s since the 1960’s. Their friendship was a special one, which lasted all the years up to his tragic accident in November 2008.
