I am a great admirer of Bill Ward's early style, the one typified by Torchy. It includes some of the best comic good girl art ever. The problem is that it appears that not much of this survives. His Cracked/Sex to Sexty is much more available. If I didn't know better, I'd swear that the two styles were by different artists. I was very pleased to get this Torchy-style piece from Ward's son, Gary Ward.

One top of being in the grail style, this is a conte crayon piece as opposed to a traditional inked piece. The thing about the conte crayon pieces is how huge they are, something you don't really grasp until you see one in person. The picture below illustrates the size. Bill Ward is the only genre artist I know of who commonly worked in crayon. CAF doesn't even list this as a media type. I chose mixed media, since the blonde color is allegedly white india ink.

The piece exemplifies the kind of glamor characteristic of the best of 1950's GGA, the hourglass body, the torpedo breasts (commonly called, "Dagmars" at the time), the long nyloned legs, the luscious hair, the big eyes, the way the short skirt that either hugs her body or is somewhat transparent. It's a masterpiece of its kind.

It was published twice, in the November 1957 Gent and in December 1964. Shrinking this down to cartoon size using 1950's technology must have been a job.

And it is too true, you really can't appreciate a conte until you've seen it in person.

That's probably good for people like us, it keeps the prices lower than they would be if our competitors knew.
