Karate Kid vs. Black Bat by Kevin Mellon

The first time that I saw Kevin's work was in the series "Thirteen Steps" and I immediately realized that this guy had some serious talent. And over the years I've just watched him get even better, especially with his work on "Hack/Slash" and "Heart". He's been on my commission list for quite a while now, and I'm glad I finally set this one up. I originally sent Kevin a few opponents to choose from, but when he told me that he was a Cassandra Cain fan, I knew that I had to go with her. And man, did Kevin deliver! First off, the setting here reminds me of the time Batman sparred with Cassandra in Batgirl #1 in the abandoned building, and they demolished it, as it looks like Karate Kid and Black Bat could have destroyed those walls themselves during the course of their fight. Second off, due to that infamous movie, the name "Karate Kid" will always be associated with sweeping the leg, so there's almost a meta-joke here, whether intended or not. And the energy and movement shown in this piece is amazing. Kevin's rougher, almost dirty style is perfect for a fight like this, which would be a rough, dirty fight. Anyway, yes I love this, and send a big thanks to Kevin for doing such a great job with it!

Black Bat is a phenomenal martial artist and her ability to read an opponent's movements should give her an advantage here, for at least ten seconds. But even though Val Armorr outclasses her, Cassandra is tough as nails and will not go down easy. I think this fight would be brutal, but afterwards Val might just take her on as a student.
