DescriptionI am not sure of the definition of a "grail" page, but I think this must have something to do with the level of emotion you get when watching a piece. And, if that is the case, then this one definitely qualifies for me...It has been hanging on my (various) wall(s) for decades and I still stop by frequently to let myself drown in the incredible détails of this page. At the turn of the 70's, Philippe Druillet exploded on the French Comic scene, like a meteor crashing down from the skies. His stories, his perspectives, his architectures were mind-blowing. I could go on like this forever : everything about him was larger than time and space... even his boards! Yes, I know, I had to make do with a photograph because I still have to find a scanner that will do justice to that page (a massive 36x25", no less...). And look at the incredibly ornate mask on the first panel, or the unholy crowd surrounding the evil magician on the third panel... Even the lettering is hand-crafted! This page, from the story Urm Le Fou, was originally published in France in 1975 and illustrates for me what is the true golden age of Philippe Druillet. Note: until I can post a proper scan, I have added a picture of the page as it appeared in print... Social/Sharing |

Druillet has created an amazing lyric word and has re-invented the art of fantasy and science-fiction. There is no doubt : each page of this period is a grail page. Congrats and thanks for sharing this treasure !.. if on day you want to let this one go, please let me know!

Wow. It is a great thing to have a published Druillet page but to have such a great one is a real feat. I can only imagine how brilliant it is in person.

Actually this is the very first original art piece I've had. I was (and still is) so much in awe of it that it took me years to consider the idea that it could turn out to be the cornerstone of a collection! I have to find a way to post a correct scan: the myriad intracacies are a joy to behold and there is enough of the pencil work visible to see how detailed it is and what choices Druillet made when inking. Interestingly, I recently chanced upon an interview of his at this period where he said that one page took him up to four days of work... I must say I'm not surprised at all!!!

Unfortunately, the picture I posted doesn't do it justice, but I just cannot find a device large enough to accomodate this very large art piece. So, until I do, you'll have to take my word for it!...

Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! What a stunning page by Philippe Druillet! I don't know anything about him, but already I love him! This page is just mindblowingly cool! I love mystical being on the top of the page--Is that a god? A magical being? I don't know, but I love him/her/it. The figure in the bottom panel--You call him a magician--Is simply magnificent! The pose, the face, the whole attitude he projects really intrigues me. But I love the whole page--The detail is astonishing! As I say, I don't know anything about Philippe Druillet, but I've got know more. Thanks for sharing this masterpiece!

Thanks Bill for your enthusiastic appreciation! I will gladly provide details, but, yes, Philippe Druillet brings things to incredibly cosmic proportions!
