Description

Batman and the Spectre have had four total team-ups in The Brave and the Bold (#75 - 1968, #116 - 1975, #180 - 1981 and #199 - 1983). Brave and the Bold #116 (January, 1975) was perhaps the very the best one featuring the Bob Haney classic story, "Grasp of the Killer Cult!" Jim Aparo was at the apex of his talent during the seventies, which is exemplified by his artwork on this cover and interior as well in the amazing run of Spectre stories in Adventure Comics #431-440 (Feb., 1974 - August, 1975), with BB #116 being done around the mid-point of that unforgettable run.

Aparo decided to draw the original artwork at a size of 6.5" x 8.5", perhaps to compensate for the more complex layout design that these Giant 100 Pages called for with the rest of the cover being stats. This is a great cover that displays such a intensely dramatic main image with a horrified Batman about to be sacrificed by the devil-god Kali, as the awesome astral avenger, the Spectre races to-the-rescue.

YOU JUST GOTTA LOVE IT!

Aparo Spectre covers from his prime period are ultra rare and highly desired among seasoned collectors, with only 11 in existence.

That is one of my favorite issues of B&B and the cover, when it popped up on dealers' sites was always priced tantalizingly close enough to dream that it was almost possible to acquire it. A few times, when a little extra money popped up, I started to figure out what it would take to sell, trade, etc to get it, but then something like termites would come along and take a bite out of my dream (literally, in the case of the termites). So, yeah, once again I am (let's not say envious) admiring of your collecting prowess. Congrats.

I grew up with Aparo's Batman, to this day still my favorite version of the character. He certainly was at the top of his game in the 70's.
