DescriptionHere we go again! Back with a neat example of Bill Everett¹s inking. This time, the pencils are by Gene Colan. Bill inked Gene on Amazing Adventures, Captain America, Daredevil, Dr. Strange, some romance comics and Tales to Astonish, among others. But, the comics that caught my attention are Everett’s work on issues 136 and 137 of Captain America. Bill was an extremely talented triple threat; with the ability to write, pencil and ink. He didn’t have too many long runs with Marvel, as he often struggled with the dreaded deadline doom. Interestingly, it’s his inking work that I find the most fascinating.

Congrats Ron! Totally agree with your assessment. Everett inking Colan was special. Too bad it only lasted a couple of issues on Cap! Congrats on picking up a beauty!

I definitely agree with you on the Colan/Palmer combo. It was probably the only reason why I even bought all those Tomb of Dracula issues. But seeing Everett's inks on Gene here is so different, but in a very nice way. Stylistically it's certainly trademark Colan, but the inks just give it such a different "texture". Palmer to my eyes was more "slick" (or maybe "flowing" is a better description), but Everett gives the art a totally different "tone" and "grit" as it were. In any case, a really beautiful (and even more INTERESTING) splash. Congratulations on another collecting gem!

Thanks for both making my day and ruining it--that is an amazing, humbling piece of art. There's nothing else like it on CAF--wow....

My dream team of artists. Everett was the best inker on Colan, himself and Kirby. This is a great page but what I like most about it is that it brings up the point of how important inking is. In this case, I'd go so far as to say that the Everett inks are more important than the Colan pencils as far as appearance and desirability goes.

The inks are outstanding! The actual printed/colored page is an injustice to how lush and wonderful the actual line work and inks are. I'm impressed and amazed. Great, great page Ron!!!!

Those INKS!!! Yowza!! Something really special that gets lost just reading the comic but shines through in the original artwork.

Obviously an awesome piece! While of course, I'd like this one for myself, I have to thank you for acquiring this splash as it helped free up some other pages from Cap 137 for a few other Colan/Everett fans!

Thanks for sharing this, Ron. I haven't seen much OA with Bill's inks over Gene's pencils. Bill always struck me as a precise artist, and you can see it in the attention to the intricate detail here, especially in the feathering of the gradation from black to white on their legs and arms. It's a beautiful example of the Colan/Everett combo. Congratulations!

Stunning splash. I love OA with lots of black, and Everett inks definitely add depth to Colan's dynamic pencils. Gem!

Bill put some incredible insight when inking: his approach is vastly different according to the penciller he was teamed-up with... The only common factor: his own style is nowhere to be seen, he is completely focused on embellishing the pencils. And, boy, does he deliver! Talk about unobstructive brilliance!!! Oh, yes, and how I too, loved this run and how disappointed was I when the Colan/Everett team dissolved after a mere couple of issues...

Ron, Another amazing piece. Personally I would take Everett before Palmer over Colan pencils. Both are great but the Colan/Everett team is amazing. I have yet to be able to lock down a page from this pairing. Congratulations!

While Colan/Everett's Black Widow art remains the unruly passion of my collecting hobby, I have to admit that Cap #136 and 137 probably represent the creative zenith for this artist pairing. For whatever reason, these are the issues where Bill Everett just poured it on, and the achievement is pretty stunning. We'll never see a Gene Colan/Gustave Doré collaboration, but this is pretty close!

Ron, once again you amaze us with another exceptional one of a kind artwork. I don't know if I'm more amazed by the beauty of this artwork or how you were able to source something as rare as this!

Furthermore, I think this is the greatest single image of Captain America (& Falcon) that I have ever seen. Never thought it would be by the team of Colan/Everett instead of Kirby but that's my humble opinion.

This is such a fantastic splash page. I wish that Colan and Everett had worked together more frequently. They made an amazing team.
