DescriptionI loved HARDBOILED so much when it came out! I had just moved to San Diego and had been away from reading comics more or less for about 3 years. Needless to say I had some great things to dig into in 1990 and some catching up to do. Hardboiled was right up my alley. At the time I was already loving Sin City by Frank Miller, so naturally I had to pick this up too. It featured gritty distopian writing by Miller, and what really blew me away was the FREAKING AWESOME art by Geof Darrow!! I had never seen his work before and the insanely detailed panels instantly mesmerized me. It really packed a wallup!This original art page is HUGE with an image area of 16 by 21 inches on a big 20x24inch piece of vellum! It really makes an impression when you hold it in your hands. I have been collecting Darrow's art for a long time and am very fascinated by his process. For Hardboiled, Geof drew detailed pencil illustration preliminaries for each and every panel in the book (each of these pencil panel drawings in and of themselves are detailed finish quality pieces). Each panel for each page was then inked fullsize and sequentially on a large sheet of vellum to make the final art page. As a result, some final pages like the page here were giant in size. Other pages are smaller. A lot of pages that feature one big splash are actually smaller - whatever size the pencil art was drawn. Anyway, I was quite thrilled to have a chance to finally add such a significant page from Hardboiled to my collection. It's got Nixon doing his thing with his signature hand-cannon, "Slammer". I can't imagine getting a better page from the story! Social/Sharing |

I think this book may have gotten better with age - great sequence from the story.

I had moved to Japan at this point, so the I think the first time I "read" Hardboiled was when I found a Japanese translation (some of the better "amekomi" were starting to get printed in Japan at that time). It was way too difficult to read with any great understanding, but, man, who cared? That artwork blew me away.

Tom, I don't know if you read that Geof mentioned the Old Woman in the story here, is actually based in appearance on his own Mom? She passed away, just the other day. That adds an extra layer of resonance, to a great page of Darrow artwork like this!..
