Description

There are 3 pieces that exist with regards to this great cover from 1987.

There is a pencil version of this cover.

There is a light boxed inked version of this cover. Miller owns that.

And then there is the Lynn Varley color guide. This is the color guide to the trade.

I bought this because I thought it was really cool. Besides being one of my favorite covers, this color guide is very unique. This is actually printed onto a bristol board rather than the typical thin color guide paper. The thickness of the bristol makes it feel like an original drawing.

Anyhow, what you see here is technically the published cover to the Wolverine trade paper back cover. Varley did a masterful job in coloring this.

Huge thanks and appreciation to Mitch of Graphic Collectibles for selling me this.

I was just thinking about this TPB cover the other day. hmm, I didn't know about the three versions. As great as the art from the mini-series is, this is my favorite from the story. In fact, it may very well be my favorite Miller artwork, period. Unfortunately for me the cost of either of the other two versions would make them unobtainable for myself. I hope I can one day live vicariously through you, and you're able to land one of the Miller versions. Congrats on this, and thanks for sharing!

Definitely one of the most memorable images of Wolvie from back then, the work on grey tones is just great and so is the color contrast between the Ninjas pack and Wolverine!

Varley's sense of color and Miller's style really were a match well made (art wise, anyway). Cheers!

I've often said how this may be my favorite period of printed Miller art. In large part due to the perfect collaboration with Lynn Varley. Value aside, of the three pieces, this would be the one I'd pick.

Gorgeous.  This is nothing like a color guide.  This is art, even if Miller did not physically draw on this particular board.  And in the end, this is the final printed cover orginal.  I'll say it again.  Gorgeous.

Scott-- there is one piece of original art. Miller re-drew the ninja's foot. I don't know if you can see the paste up. Hopefully the updated picture shows that. 8 )

So when you say, "printed on bristol", what you are actually saying is that the Miller linework was reproduced on the board and Varley applied colors directly to the board.  Right?  So technically, only the linework is printed onto the board.  The colors are all original.  In any case, it certainly is stunning.  Much more dramatic than any of the solo shots on the four individual covers.  Love that it's already framed and ready to be proudly displayed.

I remember picking up this trade paperback when it first came out in '87 and as a twelve year old punk kid thinking, damn, that's a bad@$$ cover. And now as a 45 year old I totally concur with my 12 year old self. And yes, even though it's not Miller original art, I think it's the best version of this cover that you can own of the 3. I know I'm late on this one but Congrats Joe!
