DescriptionBeauty of an image from Wrightson’s early days, when he was just 20 years old and publishing his first stories in House of Mystery. I love everything about this image — check out the dripping foliage at the top of the page, or the stylized pants leg of the main character, or the creepy ghouls. Wrightson showing what he does best. Art is a nice size (8” x 11”).This was published in issue #4 of the EC fanzine Spa-Fon. Spa-Fon was no joke, featuring covers and art by Frazetta, Wrightson, Krenkel, Kaluta, Crandall, and other top artists of the day (“Spa Fon” was an expression used by aliens in EC comics, kind of the equivalent of “Good Lord”). Wrightson had met Frazetta the year before (1967) at a comic convention, and was so inspired by his work that he decided to go into comics himself. This is one of two Frazetta tribute pieces that Wrightson did for Spa Fon #4 (the other one was used as the back cover — see additional photo attached). Notice the “F” (for Frazetta) on the main characters belt. If I had to guess, this is supposed to be Frazetta (it sure looks like him!). Wrightson is honoring his hero here - the guy who drove him into his newly found career. Great stuff. Social/Sharing |

Wow! This is just fascinating! Bernie Wrightson at age 20! Such a gorgeous tribute to Frank Frazetta! You can see the techniques as he's beginning to learn them. I also see a little Alex Raymond in the figure of our sword-wielding protagonist. I love seeing early work by great artists because you can watch their growth at different stages. This is a particularly great one because Bernie was learning at a very rapid pace. Even at 20, you can see he's one to watch!
