DescriptionThe original painting for card #52 from the 1994 SkyBox Superman: Man of Steel card set by Ray Lago. This card was titled, "The Lady Maxima". Maxima first appeared in Action Comics #645 (September 1989) and was created by writer Roger Stern and artist George Pérez. In that appearance, she was depicted as a morally ambiguous queen from the planet Almerac known for searching for mates among Earth's superhuman male population to be wedded as her king. Maxima's first appearance in Metropolis was not actually her but a simulacrum of her brought to Earth by her servant Sazu, who took it upon herself to convince Superman to be her mate. The "real" Maxima then became obsessed with Superman for a time. The piece is fully rendered in color with mixed media. It has an image area of ~ 6.5 x 11.5" on a 9 x 14" piece of 2-ply watercolor paper. It is signed "Lago" in the lower left of the image. Provenance and art description: Wallace Harrington (thank you) Social/Sharing |

Very beautifully done like a sci-fi painting from the golden age where a hero is stupified when meeting a bewitching alien queen. Thje approach to it is great and the execution hits the mark completely.

I have to admit I'm jealous. I always preferred this piece over the cover if Action Comics #651 it's based on.

Ralph, thanks for the heads up! Didn't know it was based on that cover! (I also like this piece better.)
