Description

This is the color guide to the 1976 Red Sonja poster hand painted by Frank Thorne. It measures 10 x 12.5 inches and the colors are gorgeous. Notes from Thorne to the printer in the margins. It differs somewhat from the published version (see Additional Images) and as usual, I prefer the original.

As usual, it is clear that your treasure chest is bottomless. This is interesting to me because the transition between the colours that Frank labeled 'purple' and 'cobalt' is something distinctive in his art (especially as used on the body in the bottom right corner). I assumed that this effect was entirely due to the colouring industry's limitations for blending. Today I learned that it originated as a distinctive artistic choice -- that was mindful of the capabilities of the colour industry. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice with the black smoke behind her that allows for the red shock of hair to stand out right in the center of the composition!
