Description

I’m a huge fan of multi-panel pages which contain a splashy main image and a couple strong storytelling panels. They’re the best of both worlds, celebrating both an artist's talents and the very mechanics and underpinnings of this crazy medium that we all love. Big pages, small pages - doesn’t matter; I love to see an artist (and comics itself) work their magic. This one seems to fit that bill. :)

And sometimes, circumstances align themselves and impossible good fortune presents you with an opportunity to level up. This was one such occasion for me. This one is -really- special: a spread from an X-Men relaunch, featuring the return of some major X-villains in an unfiltered, off-the-chain, nuclear creative explosion by the uncanny team of Bachalo and Townsend. Does anything more really need to be said…?

Sorry, I’m going to. As an artist who routinely unleashes some uniquely crazy, visionary illustration and design sensibilities, getting to see Chris Bachalo’s take on a murderous robot rampage is dizzyingly exciting. Giant bridge cables as neck tendons, enormous death lasers as (literal) armaments, huge pulsing chest reactors as power sources…. Yup - it’s all there… but who’s gonna ink it?

Tim Townsend was up to the challenge. He’s up to his usual magic here; thick lines, thin lines, all the many tools at his disposal to lock this bad boy down. The Sentinels themselves (along with the rubble they leave in their wake) steal the show, of course, but our heroes bear his outstanding inks, too (I love the rendering and shading of Cyclops in panel 3, as he gets throw aside by the force of the Sentinel's fist crashing down). I also really like the way the city background is handled: there's 'just enough' detail on the buildings so that it doesn't upstage any of the main images or action (honestly, it can't hope to!), but it 'crowds it' all just enough to really underscore the cramped quarters, 'filled space', and 'danger-to-civilians' elements of this street intersection setting.

As is often the case, this relaunch brought with it new characters and some costume redesigns for the main heroes. Cyclops’s new look turned heads, but Magik’s redesign set a new standard for the character. Super fun to have such early appearances of them, characters and costumes alike!

And speaking of designs, one of the things that is most special about the Sentinels is their wonderful visual. Simultaneously classic, futuristic, and timeless, artists can almost do whatever they want with it and the viewer just KNOWS: Sentinels. X-Men #14 - Sentinels. New X-Men #114 (Grant Morrison / Frank Quitely) - WIIIIILD Sentinels! Uncanny X-Men #1 - SENTINELS!

K, words cannot adequately convey my gratitude for this opportunity. Thank you, sir (and the hand delivery was an extra special, icing-on-the-cake bonus :) )!

It took decades for Bachalo's style to grow on me enough to appreciate it, but it couldn't have come at a better time. I've said it before but I'll say it again, there is something about The Sentinels that I just can't help but love. I think it's the scale by which we see how terrifying they'd be if they actually existed as people hunting robots! Bachalao truly brings them to life here. I look at this DPS and it feel like I'm seeing a snapshot of an event that happened in real life. Such is the cinematic scope that it exudes! Such a great piece, Jason, congrats!

Here it is! I didn't realize it was from the very first issue. You know, Bachalo is not the most instantly readable storyteller out there but those challenging layouts make for FUN exploration of what is happening on the page. Here the various sentinels, the debris (one of his trademarks), the big one's ligthening chest core...So much going on. But what's best is the INSANE sense od scale he infused this DPS with, complete with the sense of chaos and dread that result from it. Plus those crispy Townsend inks make for a true winner. Congrats, Jason.

Fantastic DPS!! I agree with you on getting a little of the best of both worlds where a splashy image merges with storytelling panels. Love his Sentinel design!

I’m with Ruben on the Sentinels.  Of course when it comes to villains, I know Magneto is to the X-Men what Doom is to the FF.  But as Ruben puts it, there’s just something about the Sentinels.  Not sure it’s even the matter of scale for me, but that’s a great point.  As we all know, size does matter.  And whenever they’re on the page, the size factor is hard to ignore.  Yeah, they always look so cool.  And over the years, every artist has had their own spin on the characters.  But I don’t know if that’s it either.  Honestly, I don’t really know where or when my love for the Sentinels began.  But one thing is for sure.  When I saw that first story arc in Neal Adams’ classic and legendary run, nothing was ever the same for me.  That was over 50 years ago.  We’ve come such a long way from that story to this DPS (even longer if you start from their first appearance in 1965).  In all those years, one thing has never changed.  Regardless of the writer and/or artist, the Sentinels are as cool and awesome as ever.  Congratulations on this awesome double spread!

I'm so glad I'm able to enlarge this one to see the AMAZING detail that went into this piece.  I'm a big fan of Chris Bachalo's artistic style, and man does Tim Townsend bring his 'A' game to the inking (but doesn't he always?).  And I agree, a DPS with one big central image and surrounding smaller panels is the best of both worlds.  GREAT addition!

It’s looking great 'cause Tim’s the inker
Oh, it looks so cute wrapped double pager
The Bendis humor makes combat so often
Uncanny seen, come and get this Townsend

Good chance your X-Men do it for ya
Walked in and dream-came-trued for Hussa
Sentinels have reformed up for ya (yes)
I know that Magik do it for ya (yes)
That talk is crazy, crash in to ya (yes)
One brush and X brand-newed it for ya (stupid)

Now he's “mutants are we” every fight, oh
Is it that sweet? Cyclops knows
Say you can't sleep, baby, I know
That's that Chris Bachalo
Move it up, down, left, right, oh
Switch it up like Bachalo
Say you can't sleep, baby, I know
That's for me, Sentinels (yes)

Huge congrats, man!  I know this one checks so many boxes for you...X-folk, Sentinels, #1 relaunch with Bendis as writer, double page spread, Bachalo, Townsend...OK, that's 6.  Is that it?  Probably not but I'm stopping there!  It's a stunner in person, as I can of course attest to, highlighted by that Bachalo stylized super Sentinel...I love all the coils beneath the plates.  So cool.  And let's not forget the X people!  Glad it's home, man, and was also glad to hand it off and hang at RCCC!

Chris Bachalo did many DPS during this run on UXM, but this is one of the best! I love how he structured the panels and that first panel: the details of the X-Men fighting the Sentinels and that shot of the huge Sentinel on the first panel. Just brilliant.

No one does chaos as elegantly as Bachalo.  Scale is his oyster, assembling loving details his forte.  Epic get!

Ah this is amazing! The most memorable double page spread for me from Bachalo's run on Uncanny X-Men. Congratulations; a true grail.

Wow! I just love this Uncanny X-Men DPS by Chris Bachalo and Tim Townsend! That top scene stretching across both pages is fantastic! That humongous Sentinel reaching down with his enormous hand is totally badass! Love, love, love it!
