DescriptionGorgeous original artwork for the celebrated magazine Bizarre Adventures #32 (Marvel, 1982) by the super-talent John Bolton (pencils and ink-wash), for the thought-provoking tale entitled "Sea of Destiny," written by Alan Zelenetz. This pivotal scene depicts the prayer of a brave Viking warrior named Runolf, who beseeches Thor to come to his aid as he is battling to stay alive in a violent sea storm. His prayer rises up in the form of a "flaming bird towards famed Asgard...the home and abode of Thor, the Norse god of Thunder. The second panel of this remarkable page is very special indeed, large splash-like showcasing the Thunder god himself in full revelry with his most trusted companions, including the beautiful Lady Sif and the Warriors Three - Hogun the Grim, Volstagg the Voluminous and the sword-master Fandral the Dashing. Thor grandstands by entertaining his friends with his great strength by hoisting a mighty white steed with one arm, while guzzling down a large mug of ale in the other. However, this jubilant celebration is suddenly brought to a somber standstill as Runolf's prayerful plea arrives in a dramatic flame, begging Thor of immediate aid. Thor goes before his father Odin to ask leave to depart and aid the desperate Viking warrior tossed to and fro in the violent Norse sea of Midgard. This sublime tale explores the age-old question of freewill vs destiny/ fate - which one of these maxims will supersede the other in an individuals life span. Thor decides to defy Odin's advise as well as the Three Norns (the Three Fates) to fly to Runolf's rescue. Will he succeed in his quest? Artwork by artist John Bolton from this time period in extraordinarily beautiful, superbly sublime in execution and very rare. It ranks as some the finest work ever done in the medium at any time! I had this book. I read time over and over and over just because I loved Bolton's artwork so much.
